Known as the New Yam Festival or the Iri Iji Festival, it is celebrated in Igbo territory to mark the change of season between August and October. The festival marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of yam consumption. According to tradition, it can't be eaten before then! Organized under the auspices of traditional authorities or elders, who pray for an even better harvest to come, the festival is accompanied by traditional dances, costumes and songs.
