This 37.6 km walking loop around the Haute-Sûre lake allows you to cross several picturesque villages that border the immense body of water, with a magnificent view of the dam from the cornice road. HOSCHEID SOUND TRAIL - KLANGWEE HOSCHEID

Site of archaeology crafts and science and technology

This 6.5 km long walking route is signposted through nature, starting and finishing at the church car park in Hoscheid. Along the route, four artists from Luxembourg and abroad created a total of 17 sound points in order to present the region from a new angle, that of listening to nature and the sounds one makes oneself. The trail can be done alone or with a guide (on request at the tourist office).

DRAPERY MUSEUM

Museums

Installed in the Maison du parc, on the very site of the old drapery closed in 1975, this museum allows the visitor to discover the artisanal manufacture of sheets from sheep's wool. During guided tours (only on request), the carefully restored machines come into action and revive this once flourishing industry. The drapery regularly hosts textile art exhibitions, where traditional crafts are combined with contemporary creation, and organises textile workshops for children and adults.

MAISON DU PARC NATUREL DE LA HAUTE-SÛRE

The Maison du Parc naturel de la Haute-Sûre has been housed since 1992 in an old restored drapery. It houses the Nature Park Visitor Centre as well as a tourist information centre, a shop with regional products (honeys, jams, etc.), the Drapery Museum and an interactive exhibition on the Nature Park. It also regularly hosts temporary exhibitions. Guided tours can be organised on request.

NATURPARK OUR – MAISON DU PARC NATUREL DE L'OUR

LES AMIS DU CHÂTEAU DE BOURSCHEID

Founded in 1972, the association Les Amis du château de Bourscheid (Friends of Bourscheid Castle) has as its main aim the safeguarding, development, restoration and tourist exploitation of the ruins of Bourscheid Castle, as well as the protection of the surrounding site. ROCK "HOCHFELS"

Cemetery and memorial to visit

The Hochfels rock is outside the village of Boulaide, in the direction of Bigonville. On this rocky promontory, in the middle of the vegetation, you will discover an anti-tank gun and a field howitzer dating from the Second World War. The two guns, one American and one German, had been abandoned near the crossroads of the Poteau de Doncols. The site was laid out in 1970 with wooden panels providing notes explaining their origin. The view on the lake of the Haute-Sûre is quite nice.

BUNKER AN DER RUNSCHELT

Monuments to visit

Located in a wood near the village and marked "Bunker" or "B", this bunker can only be reached on foot. During the Nazi occupation, the resistance built underground bunkers in which resistance fighters hid. Five bunkers were inhabited during the German occupation in Kaundorf. The bunker An der Runschelt was restored and listed in 1987. A memorial plaque is affixed to the bunker in honor of all the patriots who succeeded in rescuing the draft dodgers from the Germans.

MEMORIAL TO THE VICTIMS OF THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE

Cemetery and memorial to visit

The bomb that makes up this very discreet memorial located on the outskirts of the village was found intact in a wood near the commune, after being dropped by an American plane on Christmas Day 1944. It was installed there in September 1980, in memory of the victims of the Battle of the Bulge which took place during the winter of 1944-1945. This bloody episode of the Second World War caused more than 200,000 dead, wounded and missing.

HARELERBERG CHAPEL (CHAPELLE NOTRE-DAME)

During the Von Rundstedt offensive (the first offensive of the Battle of the Bulge), the inhabitants of Bavigne promised to erect a chapel to Mary. And so, since 1953, this rounded summit, known locally as Harelerberg, has been topped by three large wooden crosses and this chapel. Until recently, a stone statue of the Virgin Mary stood on a stone pedestal, but for safety reasons it was moved to the parish church.

The solar boat offers guided tours on the lake of the Haute-Sûre, to discover its fauna and its surrounding nature. MUSEUM OF THE HISTORY OF THE CITY OF DIEKIRCH

Inaugurated in 2012, the Diekirch History[s] Museum comprises five rooms, each dedicated to a specific thematic area. This craft micro-brewery was founded in 2001 and has belonged to the Simon Group since 2006. It is part of the Cornelyshaff restaurant and produces four beers: Wäissen Ourdaller (white), Wëllen Ourdaller, Karel (amber) and Hannah (hemp-flavored). They are made with malt, hops and, depending on the type of beer, various types of cereal. All using traditional processes. The micro-brewery is open to visitors on request.

SCHUMANN'S ECK MEMORIAL OR MEMORIAL 44-45

Memorial to visit

This memorial was erected on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation of Luxembourg by the Allied armies. It contains the plaques of the American units that took part in the battle. Nearby, a 3 km-long memorial trail leads through the woods that were the object of intense fighting. The holes of the riflemen correspond to the locations of the bodies of the 160 German and American soldiers who were discovered there after the fighting that followed on December 30, 1944.

HEIDERSCHEIDERGRUND CHAPEL

Nicknamed "the inkwell" because of its original octagonal shape, this tiny neo-Gothic chapel with its white walls is a true rarity. Built between 1849 and 1852, it is dedicated to Saint Cunégonde. The patron saint is represented in several forms: there is a statue above the portal and on the altar as well as a painting in the stained glass window. Since 1991, the building has been on the national inventory of listed monuments.

In 1630, Godefroy d'Eltz et de Clervaux and his wife Dorothée de Raville donated the Chapel of the Three Virgins to the Franciscans so that they could welcome the numerous pilgrims. The interior impresses by the richness of its baroque decoration. BRANDENBURG CASTLE

Built in the 9th and 13th centuries, there are still very beautiful ruins of Brandenburg Castle (name of its first known owner, Godfrey of Brandenburg - 1244-1284). After extensive archaeological excavations, some dangerous parts were consolidated and a secure route was built. The wooden route with explanatory panels starts at the tunnel that connects the main castle with the farmyard of the original castle keep. The path makes a detour through the spacious chapel of the original castle and also allows you to admire the beautiful cellars.

HAUTE-SÛRE NATURE PARK

Natural site to discover

With an area of 18 387 hectares (about 250 km ²), this park, established in 1999, comprises 7 communes (Boulaide, Ell, Esch-sur-Safe, Heiderscheid, Lake of Haute-safe, Neunhausen and Weinseler). The resident population is approximately 5 500 inhabitants.

The lake of Haute-Safe and its facilities are the main point of the park. This artificial lake, 380 hectares and 27 km in length, was created in 1961 by the construction of a dam that allows the supply of two thirds of the country to drinking water. The bottom of the main restraint, upstream of the Misery Bridge, is a wild fauna, elsewhere threatened with extinction, such as the otter, the wild cat or the grouse. The lake trail (42 km) allows walkers to admire the beauty of the region and there is the possibility to practise a good number of water sports. The park is the starting point for many thematic circuits with distances ranging from 600 m to 8 km and rides.

PATTON MUSEUM

Specialized museum

Inaugurated in 1995, this museum and a monument were erected in honour of General George Patton, commander of the US Third Army, who liberated Ettelbruck during the Second World War on 25 December 1944. Numerous photographs and documents document the German invasion in May 1940, the Nazi occupation, and the liberation by American troops. Numerous weapons and military equipment are on display. General Patton is buried in the American military cemetery of Luxembourg-Hamm, in the eastern suburbs of Luxembourg City.

CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY OF THE VIRGIN MARY

The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in 1757 on older foundations. The tower dates back to 1806. In the apse there is a Gothic Eucharistic cupboard. The altarpiece with a central niche in perspective dates back to the second half of the 18th century. Its polychromy was made in 1858 by Peter Dausch and Nicholas Stegreiff of Trier. The Müller organ dates from 1901 and the altar is a listed monument.

ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH

Situated near the bridge over the river Our, the church of St. Nicholas was built in the lower town by the Order of the Knights Templar, towards the end of the 13th century, when Vianden was divided into two parishes. The building was destroyed by fire in 1723 and rebuilt the following year. The interior, a single nave with a ribbed vault, houses a Baroque high altar, made in 1768 by the carpenter Fischbach from Vianden and enriched with Rococo elements. Note that until 1801 the lower town was part of the parish of Roth.

One of the country's most important religious monuments. From Gothic style to two naves, it was built in 1248 by Count Henri I of Vianden to thank Trinitarian for having bought his father, made prisoner by the Saracens during the crusades. STOLZEMBOURG COPPER MINE

SAINT WILLIBRORD CHURCH

This church, founded in the 10th century and rebuilt in the 16th century, has a late medieval Gothic nave. Its ribbed vaults include a group of remarkable frescoes. They date from the 15th and 16th centuries and depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments as well as the saints who were venerated in the region. The furniture dates from the end of the 17th century. On Pentecost Sunday, an open-air mass is celebrated in honour of St Willibrord to whom the church is dedicated. This remarkable church is classified as a National Monument.

SAINT-HUBERT CHURCH

Its foundations date back to the 13th century. The tower is made of Ardennes schist and the façades of the nave are covered with the white plaster typical of the Ardennes. The interior of the chapel has a single nave with three bays. The keystone above the high altar represents the coat of arms of Frederick II of Brandenburg. The altarpiece of the altar illustrates the glorification of the patron saint of the church. Murals from the 15th and 16th centuries depict a crucified Christ, the symbols of the four evangelists and polychrome ornamentation of the flames.

Founded in 1989 under the name "Domaine touristique du cheval de trait ardennais", the site has been called the Robbesscheier Nature Center since 2013. It covers more than 6 hectares and includes a discovery park, accommodation and a restaurant. The children discover, through several workshops, the Luxembourgish way of life of yesteryear such as the baking of bread or the work of the blacksmith. The domain also organizes bicycle, walking and carriage tours.

SAINT PIRMINE'S CHAPEL

Built in 1653 and rebuilt in 1772, this modest chapel is a place of pilgrimage on Whit Monday. It houses an impressive white baroque altarpiece with a statue of Saint Pirmin. The bishop is said to have lived as a hermit near the cluse in which there is a well, whose water is said to have medicinal virtues (it was used to cure children's diseases). Be careful not to confuse the tiny hermitage, which is located a few dozen meters from the main road, with this building, which is located on a higher ground.

BATTLE OF THE BULGE MUSEUM

On 16 December 1944, under the command of General von Rundstedt, German troops attacked the American line along the Sûre and the Our. This bloody episode of the Second World War, which lasted two months and caused thousands of casualties, is called the Battle of the Bulge. This museum looks back on this historical period that led to the final liberation of Luxembourg from the occupier. It displays documents but also uniforms and weapons.

NOTRE-DAME-DE-LLORETTE CHAPEL

The chapel was built in 1762 in a late baroque style by Count Adrien Jean-Baptiste de Lannoy and his wife Constance de Wignancourt to make it a place of pilgrimage dedicated to Mary. On the portal are represented their coat of arms and a relief of Our Lady of Loreto. Inside, the ceiling is adorned with a stuccoed rocaille decoration. The high altar is surrounded by two funerary monuments of the Lannoy family. The bell tower could have housed a hermit during services.

ST. LAWRENCE CHURCH

The first Christian altar was probably built in the 7th century on a Roman shrine and gave its name to the town, diet kirch meaning "people's church". Of the Romanesque building constructed around the year 1000, only a 12th century tower remains today. In the 15th century, the church was transformed to have two naves in Gothic style. The 16th century frescoes illustrate the life of St. Lawrence, the patron saint of the church. In the crypt there are Roman and Merovingian sarcophagi from the 6th century that were discovered under the church.

The Diekirch brewery was founded in 1871 and is today part of the Brasserie de Luxembourg group, which has been part of the Belgian-Brazilian group Anheuser-Busch InBev since 2005. The latter has introduced into the company a whole range of major international brands: Leffe, Hoegaarden, Belle-Vue, Stella Artois, Jupiler, Franziskaner, Beck's and Super-Bock. WILTZ GARDEN

This museum, housed in the former A Schiewesch (Shepherd's) farmhouse, gives visitors a clear idea of peasant life in days gone by.
