When you're planning an evening of drinking on a tight budget, it can be interesting to go to izakaya, Japanese bars, where good deals with unlimited drinks are on offer.
To be booked
Theater shows and nightclub events can quickly sell out. It's advisable to book in advance.
Night transport
Subways and trains run until about midnight, depending on the line. Afterwards, people line up in front of station taxi ranks, hail them in the street, use Uber or sleep in an Internet café. The last trains are usually crowded.
Age restrictions
You have to be 20 to enter a nightclub in Japan, just as you do to buy alcohol. In principle, you must show proof of identity. However, no proof of identity is usually required on entry.
What's very local
When visiting traditional Japanese theaters, it's common to come across women dressed in kimonos. No dresscode is necessary, however.
Smokers
Since April 2020, legislation has prohibited smoking inside bars and nightclubs that exceed a certain size. In any case, clubs often have a smoking room.
