The image made the rounds of the news channels. On April 16, Copenhagen residents were stunned to discover that the Old Stock Exchange, a jewel of the city's heritage, had been destroyed by flames. The Danish landmark, known for its long brick facades decorated with sandstone sculptures and caryatids, its cross-headed windows, its large gabled dormers and its original spire encircled by four dragons, dates back to the 17th century and was under construction at the time of the fire. The Copenhagen building was about to celebrate its 400th anniversary this year. The damage is extensive, and the main facade collapsed on Thursday, April 18. The investigation will shed light on the circumstances surrounding this tragedy, and no doubt the Danes, like heritage lovers the world over, will be keen to see the sublime Børsen reborn.
