Created in 1990, Gunung Palung National Park covers 90,000 hectares. It is one of Indonesia's largest parks, where many orangutans still roam freely. The great red ape is the park's main attraction, recognized as the lord of Borneo. Nearly 2,000 apes of this species live in this tropical zone, which is supposed to be protected from poachers and illegal loggers. In addition to orangutans, endemic species include the Nasalis larvatus monkey, the gibbon, the semnopithecus and numerous mammals, deer, squirrels, lemurs, bears, birds, snakes, crocodiles, turtles, insects and a huge diversity of flora. Among the rarest are exotic black orchids (Coelogyne pandurata). Many flowers and plants are used to make medicinal remedies. There are seven types of vegetation in Palung Park, making it one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet. These include mangrove forest, swamp forest, alluvial forest, tropical lowland, tropical rainforest, tropical upland forest and sub-alpine forest.
