Although the Piedras Rojas site has long remained off the beaten track of Atacama tourist itineraries, it is increasingly attracting the interest of travellers who have come to discover the region. In the hollow of the Aguas Calientes salar (itself part of the Talar salar), this formation displays a sensational, almost hypnotic reddish cameo, the result of the oxidation of the rock. The contrast with the turquoise blue of the water creates a striking panorama, and for many, one of the most beautiful in the region. Be sure to bundle up - you're standing 3,950 metres above sea level. And the wind never stops blowing! It's a two-hour drive from San Pedro!
