Uralla, home to less than 2,500 people, was born in 1855, after several squatters (ranchers) settled in the area. It was the infamous bushranger Captain Thunderbolt (Frederick Ward) who gave the town its notoriety. Thunderbolt is buried in the town cemetery and a statue of him stands on the main street. With a rich heritage, Uralla has over 50 buildings and sites of historical significance that can be easily explored on foot. An old mill, the McCrossins Mill, has been transformed into an eco-museum. There is of course an exhibit on Captain Thunderbolt.
