Boende is a small, peaceful town 280 kilometers east of Mbandaka, with a population of around 35,000. It is also a commercial center with a lively market selling fresh produce as well as manufactured goods such as clothing and tools. The town is surrounded by lush vegetation, typical of the rainforest. The town's inhabitants rely heavily on the forest for their livelihood, using the trees for house-building, tool-making and hunting. In terms of transport, Boende is accessible via the Tshuapa River and a light aircraft airstrip.
