Kabinda is located 150 km from Mbuji-Mayi and 400 km from Kinshasa. Kabinda has a population of about 100,000. The city is located in a fertile agricultural region. The town is surrounded by the Lomami Forest Reserve, home to forest elephants, chimpanzees and okapi. The reserve is also known for its exceptional biodiversity, with many rare plant species. However, the area has been affected by armed conflict and inter-communal violence in recent decades, which has had an impact on the security and stability of the town and surrounding region.
