ПЛОСКИЙ ВУЛКАН ВУЛКАН. The Plosky Tolbalchik volcano (3,682 m above sea level) is located 350 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and is part of the Klyushchevskaya Volcanic Group, which is located in the eastern part of the peninsula and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The volcano is intersected by two calderas: the first, 3 km in diameter, formed about 6,500 years ago. Inside is the second, very young, 400 m high and 1.8 km in diameter, formed in 1975-1976. This (penultimate) eruption forever changed the surroundings of the volcano, causing two ruptures (to the north and south), also creating four slag cones and destroying all the vegetation over 400 km². A visit to the volcano, its cones and the "dead forest" makes one aware of the extent of these natural phenomena.
