PEARLING PATH (ROUTE DE LA PERLE)
Route de la Perle, featuring 17 buildings, in a 3.5 km stretch from the Bu Mahir shoreline to the heart of the old town
Muharraq's history is closely linked to that of the pearl fishermen, who made its glory, its decline and then its revival. In 1930, before competition from Japanese cultured pearls, 20,000 to 30,000 people made their living from this economy: fishermen, captains, merchants... Bahrain's pearl fishing tradition has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Pearl Route links 17 buildings over 3.5 km, from the Bu Mahir shoreline to the historic heart.
