Shipyard, 40 km south of Orange Walk, is the country's largest Mennonite community. Founded in the 1960s by Mennonites from Mexico, its population has grown steadily since then, from around 700 to 3,500 today. Located on the edge of the Orange Walk District, you can make a detour here before taking the road to the village of Indian Church and the Mayan ruins of Lamanai. The friendly locals will be delighted to tell you more about their way of life. Living in semi-autarchy, the men's main occupations are farming and carpentry.
