San Antonio de Palé is a city of Equatorial Guinea, capital of the province of Annobón and situated on the eponymous island. Its population is approximately 5 008 inhabitants. The main languages are annobonense (or «fadanbo») and Spanish. The city is located at the northern end of the island. The city is the port of arrival of visitors, and there is frequent exchange of people and goods by fishermen in São Tomé.San Antonio de Palé was founded by the Portuguese, who brought slaves to it. After the treaties of San Ildefonso (1777) and Pardo (1778), between Spain and Portugal, the island of Annobón and other Portuguese possessions in the Gulf of Guinea went to Spanish hands. At that time, the island had approximately 1 500 inhabitants. In 1801, the English, who had permission from Spain to anchor and supply drinking water, built a small fortress there. In 1827, the Royal Navy had a basis for intercepting the slave trade to America and resettling the slaves released. Over the centuries, the town suffered the same fate as the island where it was installed, until the beginning of its modernization in the st century.
