The road is asphalted shortly after the Cuesta de Los Patos, and after kilometres one reaches the astonishing small town of El Salvador, which was first built to accommodate the workers of a copper mine, and whose architecture is not colonial, but rather evokes the postmodern route of Oscar Niemeyer in Brasilia. Today, it is a commercial and administrative centre that is important enough for an airport to be built in the vicinity. You can stay there. There are buses between Chañaral and Copiapó and Diego de Almagro and El Salvador.
