A few kilometres before Gondar, the village of Woleka is more interesting for its history than for the traces it left there. Indeed, it symbolizes the destiny of the Falasha, the former Ethiopian Jews in the region before their massive emigration in Israel. There would be only one person in this community, waiting for departure (apparently for years), which perpetuates the tradition of pottery that did long the fame of the Falasha. In addition to a few terracotta figures exposed to tourists, a small synagogue remains (a simple box surmounted by the star of David), the last witness of a tormented past. You can visit the Falasha handicraft village on one side of the road, to report pretty memories of Ethiopia, or on the other side of the road, visit the women's handicraft cooperative, which helps widows or women who are denied their village to collect some money through learning these techniques. He discovered the art of weaving traditional fabrics, making pottery in furnaces donated by Japan and Germany, in particular. You can easily go into tuk-tuk from Gondar.
