The largest island in Mexico, it is separated from the mainland by a strait barely three kilometers wide, called estrecho del infernillo . It can be reached from the mainland village of Punta Chueca, 35 km north of Bahia Kino. The island is officially uninhabited, although there is a military base on its eastern side; it is administered by the Seri people, who consider it a sacred land and the cradle of their civilization. In terms of topography, it is an archipelago that includes three other islands of anecdotal size: San Esteban, Turner and Patos. Although at first glance the place gives the impression of being just a big rock planted there, it has some interesting natural attractions. The island is split by two mountainous bands(sierras La Menor and Kuumkaak) that cross it from one side to the other and lead to the voluptuous Valle del Tecomate. Many animal and plant species can be observed here, as well as beautiful bird colonies, reptiles and mammals in the wild, including the borrego cimarrón and the borrego cola blanca.
