LA FERME AUX SERPENTS - SNAKE FARM
Educational farm offering an interesting guided tour of snake species, turtles...
Luc Paziaud, who has lived in the Gambia for many years, opened this farm over twenty years ago out of concern for the plight of Gambia's somewhat neglected reptiles. He takes in sick or lost animals, which are then cared for and released back into the wild. You'll see snakes, turtles, crocodiles and chameleons, among other species. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even get up close to the royal python and carry it on your shoulders! Luc recently took in a young orphaned hyena, found in Niumi National Park. He has formed a strong relationship with her, like a master with his dog. You can observe her from outside her enclosure, but don't approach her. The farm has an educational purpose, and many of the country's schoolchildren visit every year to learn more about their country's wildlife. Luc also works with the government, providing data and samples on Gambian wildlife. The visit is very interesting, in the company of Luc, who knows a thing or two about it. In 2019, the farm was largely destroyed by a bush fire, but fortunately Luc and his family were able to save the animals in time. Since the farm was rebuilt, life has returned to normal, and although it will take years for it to regain its former verdant colors, the flora is now gradually reclaiming its rights. An unforgettable experience!
