Banjarmasin (or Bandjermasin) has a population of around 625,000. It was the capital of South Kalimantan province until February 15, 2022, when the capital was transferred to Banjarbaru. It is the largest and certainly one of the most interesting cities in the Indonesian part of Borneo. It's nicknamed the city of a thousand rivers, or the Venice of Borneo. Its floating markets, accessible only by boat, are a must-see for travelers. Banjarmasin is linked by water to the town of Banjarbaru. Together, they form one of Indonesia's largest population concentrations. The city is economically very active. It is also the starting point for numerous treks.
