A port town with a population of 45,000, Pemangkat faces the China Sea, 180 km from Pontianak. The population of Pemangkat is made up mainly of Haka and Teochew Chinese, Malays, Javanese and Dayak. The strong Chinese community, which has lived here for over three centuries, has strongly influenced the town's architecture. Several temples colour this austere little city. The most famous of these, the Shen Mu Nyong temple, is located on Mount Elephant (Gunung Gajah). Hotels in Pemangkat are few and far between, or offer very little in the way of comfort. Most tourists stay in Singkawang, 30 kilometers away.
