The small town is something of a suburb of Pontianak. Sintang is located 30 kilometers from the capital, at the confluence of the Kapuas and Melawi rivers. The town is the capital of the eponymous kabupaten (subdivision of the province) and is best known for its monument marking the location of the equator. The kabupaten of Sintang was once a Hindu kingdom, which later converted to Islam. The region came under the sway of Majapahit and the Sultanate of Brunei, before the Dutch occupied the area on their arrival in 1776. Sintang was under Japanese control from 1941 to 1945, before becoming part of Indonesia.
