The swampy area of Elephant Marsh lies in the floodplain of the Shire at the confluence of this river and the Ruo, which originates in the Mulanje massif. This area, whose surface area varies between 400 and 1,200 km² depending on the season and climatic hazards, owes its name to David Livingstone who reportedly saw a plethora of elephants. Most of the proboscidians, victims of hunting, have now disappeared, but the marshes still shelter crocodiles, hippos and a plethora of birds (cranes, kingfishers...). Nyala Lodge, located in Lengwe National Park, organizes boat trips on the canals that creep into the vegetation north of Chiromo and Makhanga.
