THUCHILA HUT

Built in 1901, Thuchila is the oldest of the Mulanje refuges. It is also the highest, built at an altitude of 2,303 metres in an enchanting setting. Visitors enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of Elephant's Head to the northeast, and from the shaded veranda, a superb view of the Zomba Plateau. There are four rooms, two with fireplaces, and a storeroom. Thuchila is an excellent base for linking six Mulanje peaks, Nandalanda (2,585 m) being the closest. Natural pools can be reached in a quarter of an hour's walk.
