KAMUZU INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Small and sleepy, Kamuzu International Airport welcomes passengers to and from Lusaka (Malawi Airlines), Harare (Malawi Airlines), Johannesburg (Malawi Airlines, South African Airways), Dar es Salaam (Malawi Airlines), Nairobi (Malawi Airlines, Kenya Airways) and Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines). It is possible to withdraw money, exchange currencies, rent a car and collect tourist information in the arrival hall. You will also find taxi drivers at the exit of the terminal (the trip between the airport and downtown Lilongwe is US$35). To hail a matola and reach the capital for less than US$1, you will have to join the M1, about 3 km away, by force of the calf (it is advisable to avoid this sporting feat at nightfall); this remains uncommon and is generally incomprehensible for the locals... Please note that most hotels and lodges in Lilongwe offer a transfer, whether or not included in the overnight rate, to or from the airport. The construction of a new terminal to increase the capacity and quality of services at Kamuzu International Airport and the rehabilitation of the existing building should be completed in 2019.
