This Mayan city, whose name means "painted vault", was described in 1842 by the explorer John Lloyd Stephens, at the same time that it was sketched by his acolyte and illustrator Frederick Catherwood. Then, many other adventurers and enthusiasts passed by and succeeded one another, like Teobert Maler who was at the origin of the discovery of the site of Tabasqueño. The real work of restoration and consolidation only began in the mid-1980s at the initiative of the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History.
