A few kilometres from the Oxkintok archaeological zone are the Calcehtok caves, which are among the largest in the region, along with those at Loltún. It is a group of caves that extend for almost five kilometres and are interconnected by a complex system of tunnels. In addition to the usual stalagmites and stalactites, one can see inside bones and different objects that probably date back to the pre-Columbian period - jars, ceramics, arrowheads. Nearby, a stone carved in the shape of a deer's head has been discovered, which seems to confirm that these caves were known to the ancient Maya. It is because of this discovery that the caves were named Calcehtok, "sharp deer throat".But beware, unlike those of Loltún, these caves are not easy to access. The tunnels are narrow and to get from one cave to another you often have to crawl or use ropes. The young guides who wait for the tourists at the entrance of the caves are a must. They know the place very well and lend you helmets with lanterns to light your way, so there is no risk of getting lost. But if you are not in good physical condition or if you are afraid of the darkness, avoid it. And bring adequate shoes and clothes that you don't want to wear, as well as spare parts!
