The islets of Rémire were formed from volcanic rock 150 million years ago. Since 2005, five of Rémire's six islets have been fully protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral. Today, only îlet la Mère is open to the public (only during the day, overnight stays are currently prohibited). Off the coast of Rémire-Montjoly, this small 56-hectare islet can be reached by motorboat in 30 minutes. It is also known as the "Îlet aux singes" (monkey islet) because of the historic presence of numerous saïmiris. As soon as you arrive, you'll see them en masse, playing near you, climbing on you... To beg for food! So don't go without packing your own picnic, and a few treats for these magnificent little monkeys (peanuts and dried fruit are recommended, but avoid processed foods to respect nature). And don't forget to bring a camera with plenty of memory, because you'll rarely see saimaris up close, and we're willing to bet you'll be photographing them like crazy!
