Cheboksary is the capital of the republic of Chuvashia. The city (about 468,000 inhabitants) is located along the Volga River, 600 km east of Moscow. There is an opera house, a philharmonic orchestra and several theatres offering performances in Russian and Chuvash languages. The Chuvash are a Turkish-speaking people whose exact origin is subject to debate, but it is assumed that they are descendants of the Volga Bulgarians, who occupied the region between the 7th and 13th centuries. For a long time endogamous, however, the Chuvash adopted some cultural elements of the Russian colonizers, including the Orthodox religion. Today, Cheboksary is the showcase of the Chuvash ethno-cultural renaissance
