This horseshoe-shaped bay begins 6 km west of Teluk Dalam, but the village of Lagundri is 12 km away. Lagundri was the island's main port until it was wiped out in 1883 by a wave similar to the one that wiped out Maumere on Flores in 1992. The tidal wave was caused by the explosion of Krakatoa. The port was rebuilt at Teluk Dalam.Lagundri is home to surfers waiting for the Big-One. On the north shore of the bay, a row of guesthouses has been built at a place called Sorake. Sorake's surfing is world-famous, from June to October. The pros say that the March 2005 earthquake "made the wave even better". It's also the ideal place to take your first surfing lessons.Lagundri is paradise as some might imagine it. The beach is superb, lined with coconut palms and the turquoise sea offers waves to die for. Unfortunately, many locals try to take advantage of tourists in a variety of ways, so you need to be on your guard at all times. You'll be asked six times the normal price for a motorcycle or airport transfer. What's more, a wave of construction is sweeping the coastline, and small bungalows have all but disappeared, to be replaced in the landscape by large buildings. The "surf" establishments here are historically the oldest, as surfers were the first to discover and "democratize" the area.
