The Wawo Muda volcano erupted in February 2001. The ensuing rains created 5 small lakes that turned red with iron oxide. A few months later, 2 lakes evaporated, but today we can still contemplate 3 mystical lakes. Many tourists choose to travel there from Bajawa in the morning (less cloudy), before visiting the traditional villages in the afternoon. You can also travel by bemo (approx. 45 min) from Bajawa to Ngorenale. Descend to the start of the trek to the volcano. The climb takes about 1h30 with a local guide (compulsory if you want to pass).
