Cobar is located 710 km northwest of Sydney. Its name is of aboriginal origin and means red earth or burnt earth. The town became known in 1870 for its copper mine, which ceased to operate in 1920. More than 10,000 people lived there. In 1965, 1982 and 1992, the activity resumed little by little with the discovery of new veins of gold, silver, lead and zinc. Three open-pit mines are still in operation but are not open to the public. However, it is possible to go to the top of Fort Bourke Hill to have a beautiful view of one of them. The downtown area is fairly well supplied with shops.
