Far from the tourist circuit, Borroloola and the Gulf of Carpentaria region of which it is the capital, are mainly visited by enthusiastic amateur fishermen attracted by the coast's underwater riches: barramundi, but also red emperor, coral trout, parrotfish and many others. King Ash Bay, 50 km away, is a prime fishing spot, as is the Sir Edward Pellew Group of Islands (find out about access rules on the NT Government website), which is also an essential area for the survival of sea turtles, dugongs and many migratory bird species. Borroloola has a colorful past, with fishermen, prospectors and cattle ranchers living side by side with aboriginal inhabitants, and is still quite wild and unruly.
