about 30,000 inhabitants. It is 265 km east of Santa Cruz. San José de Chiquitos was founded in 1697. Its main economic activities are cattle raising, agriculture, and tourism. Its church is the only one of the Chiquitania missions to have four main structures, all made of stone. Its façade is probably the most impressive of all, but it is also the least typical because of its particular architecture. It is reminiscent of the missions in northern Argentina and Paraguay. San José also has a museum presenting the history of the region and the city as well as murals dating from the Jesuit era.
