The Sierras de Mahoma do not owe their name to the Muslim prophet, but to a distortion of the nickname given to the Indians by the Spaniards who called them "ohma". These amazing geological formations located in the heart of a wild vegetation are undoubtedly part of the most surprising sites of the country, ideal for bird watching. With an area of 28 km2, they are made of granite and include imposing stone walls of more than 170 meters high, easy to climb. The main entrance is located on National Road 23 at kilometer 126. It is 37 km from San José and 131 km from Montevideo.
