It is here the petrified forest that deserves your attention: these are the largest fossilized trees in the world, some of which were 1,000 years old. Some 150 million years ago, a coniferous forest covered Patagonia and the volcanic activity buried the fallen trees, and the rain, mixing with the ash, was loaded with salts that penetrated the plant tissue, until they were substituted. Thus, the organic plant matter was replaced by mineral matter. Some trees are up to 35 m high, with a diameter of 3 m!
