Seventy kilometers from Bukhara, in the direction of Olot and the Turkmen border, the silty hills of Varaksha hide the ruins of one of the largest Sogdian cities in the region. Archaeological excavations have shown that on the eve of the Mongol attacks, the city was famous for its twenty-day Navrouz market. But Varaksha was not as fortunate as Bukhara, and after the Mongols destroyed its irrigation system, it withered away and soon became a ghost town. Excavations revealed frescoes that decorated the 7th century palace. They are exhibited in the Tashkent Historical Museum.
