The famous sacred eels with blue or green eyes (puhi tari'a or eels with ears) undulate in the submerged roots of the mugs (chestnut trees). Although they are of an impressive size (1 to 2 m) for the size of this river, children play with them by the dozens. When they are at school, they rest and hardly move at all, almost resembling huge holothurians. The environment is not impressive, and don't expect any marvels, but a little stop is still needed for the form.

Si vous traversez Huahine en scooter en en voiture, n'hésitez pas à vous arrêter 5 minutes pour voir les anguilles géantes qui se cachent au bord du cours d'eau et sortiront alléchées par le contenu des conserves de poisson que vous aurez emmenées ou achetées aux enfants du village.

La population locale vous expliquera volontiers comment voir les anguilles et confiera peut-être l'un ou l'autre anecdote.
