ÉGLISE DE LA SAINTE-MÈRE-DE-DIEU

The village of Vaitahu has a beautiful Catholic church that seems to stand mainly as a reminder of the fervor of the people. Inaugurated in 1988, it was financed by the Vatican. In a half-Marquisian, half-Catholic style, several sculptures are sometimes of an ambiguous kind; they are nevertheless always finely realized, like this 4-meter high Virgin and Child, carved in wood.
