Capital of the province of Río Negro, Viedma is a charming little town with a population of only 50,000 inhabitants, and according to studies, it is the oldest village in Patagonia; its origin dates back to April 22, 1779. At that time Francisco Viedma erected the "Fuerte del Carmen" (Fuerte del Carmen) in order to begin the settlement of this territory. The city experienced some turmoil at the end of the nineteenth century during floods that destroyed all the buildings. Today, the city is rich in historical and cultural heritage, it could even have become the new capital of Argentina in 1986, but the 'Proyecto Patagonia' remained a dead letter.
