On the banks of the Volga River, opposite the confluence of the Vetluga River, lies the ancient village of Pokrovskoe, one of the first Russian settlements in the mountains of the Maris Territory, very prosperous in the 19th century. Today, the wheel has turned and it is difficult to imagine that 90 years ago it was a land of opportunity and migration. The ruined Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin, dating from 1779, stands alone on the bank of the Volga. Closed in 1939, it reminds everyone of the sad fate of Russian rural towns and is seen as a symbol of the disappearance of many villages and small towns on the Volga.
