18 km north of Puerto Escondido, the Manialtepec lagoons, bordered by mangroves, are a refuge for numerous animal species, including an incredible quantity of birds. The area can be explored by boat or kayak, which allows you to stop wherever you want and relax on the beach. During the rainy season, from May to November, the river tends to overflow and become an estuary. You can visit the lagoon at nightfall, when the bioluminescence phenomenon is at its peak (a species of plankton is responsible for this rare phenomenon, which can be observed especially in August).
