Jiujiang's second agglomeration behind Nanchang is a practical step on the way to Lushan. Located near Poyang Lake, which spills into Yangtze, Jiujiang has served as a port town since ancient times and was even a flourishing exchange center of South China for subjects such as tea and rice. In 1862, following the unequal treaties marking the end of the second opium war, it was forced to open up to international trade as a «treaty port». Today, Jiujiang remains an important supply point for neighboring Hubei and Anhui provinces.
