The birthplace of Mao Zedong, which led the People's Republic of China between 1949 and 1976, the small town of Shaoshan (100 000 inhabitants) was also one of the strong places of the Communist revolution initiated by the Grand Helmsman. This is a historic place, very visited, because Mao remains a very appreciated figure of the Chinese, almost mythical even, despite the affres in which he plunged the country during his campaigns of the Great Leap Forward (1958-1960) and then the cultural revolution (1966-1976).
