The main tourist site of the department, 45 kilometres from Pedro Juan Caballero. The national park is home to many natural and cultural riches, but for Paraguayans, it is first and foremost a historic place. The one where the famous " ¡ Muero con mi patria! "("I die with my homeland"), by Francisco Solano López, March 1, 1970. The death of the marshal on the banks of the Río Aquidabán Niguí marked the end of the Triple Alliance War. A cross by the river indicates where López and his son, Panchito, fell. A monument has been erected in memory of those who perished in this final battle, and the March 1st celebrations attract many people. The park protects more than 12,000 hectares of Cerrado type vegetation and important fauna, including endangered birds such as the famous pájaro campana, the national bird. Interpretive trails are provided, as well as facilities for swimming in the Aquidabán River. In the Gasorý Eco-Archaeological Reserve, thousand-year-old rock inscriptions can be seen on some of the limestone walls of Cerros Akuá and Lorito. The park is easily accessible by car (or taxi) from Pedro Juan Caballero. Open every day, the visitor centre is well signposted and you will find rangers who act as guides to accompany you on the trails. The main tours on offer (Cerro Corá, Cerro Muralla and Gasorý) can be done during the day. Free camping in the park, with its equipment (bring provisions).
