"Nature, the beautiful jealous one, hides her perfections from those who do not dedicate themselves faithfully and with all their soul to her admiration, in the very theatre of her triumphs. ». Moisés Bertoni (1857-1929) was one of the pioneers in the scientific exploration of the region and in the study of the Mby'a and Avá Guaraní civilizations. The Moises Bertoni Scientific Monument is dedicated to the memory of this great agronomist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This 199-hectare reserve protects a true sanctuary of biodiversity, in the middle of a deforested region invaded by soybean fields. It is made up of the vegetation of the Atlantic Forest of High Paraná and is home to an exceptional fauna: 146 species of birds (25 of which are endemic), monkeys, tapirs, deer, peccaries, pumas and jaguars.... The Bertoni family home has been transformed into a museum on the life of the "Sage" and his important scientific legacy. The site is 36 km south of Ciudad del Este, a little over an hour's drive and track. After Presidente Franco, take the direction of Los Cedrales, by a gravel road, then take a dirt track on the left for the last 16 km (sign). Be careful, a 4x4 is highly recommended, and indispensable after or during the rain. The agencies offer the excursion and it is also possible to get there by taxi (no bus). Count then around 300 000 Gs the round trip, with waiting on the spot (to be negotiated). The site is also accessible by river, with excursions from Presidente Franco, Puerto Iguazú, or Foz de Iguazú.
