Created on June 28, 2006, following studies and surveys conducted for several years by the Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation and Tourism, in partnership with the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), the Lomako-Yokokala nature reserve extends over an area of 3 625 km ² to 200 km northeast of Mbandaka. Its main mission is to protect bonobos monkeys as well as other less known but endemic animal species such as the giant pangolin, the gold cat and the peacock of Congo.
