On Kuta beach, thousands of Sasaks gather to collect fluorescent marine worms (Nyales), then eat them (grilled or raw) to enjoy their alleged aphrodisiac virtues. The party lasts all night, punctuated by poetic jousting and gamelan performances. Picturesque and traditional, this practice is considered to herald a good harvest for the coming year, but not only that. The fertility of the earth is associated with human fecundity, and teenagers are at their festive best during the fishing season.
