Wau is the capital of the Bahr el Ghazal region and administratively, western Bahr el-Ghazal. It is the second largest urban agglomeration in the south, the largest city of the agropastoral dinka people, the dominant ethnic southern Sudan. Wau has suffered particularly from the war and, today, the wounds of the past are far from being healed. In the 1980 s, Wau suffered, like Darfur and other parts of the country, great famines, accentuated by the perpetuation of fighting on the ground, sometimes very violent. The town was several times taken by the SPLA rebellion, and its population and that of the region had severe reprisals.Wau is located on the north shore of the Jur, one of the tributaries of Bahr el-Ghazal which flows into White Nile. The dinka city hosts several other ethnic groups, some of which are of darfourie or Ecuadorian origin who have had to flee fighting or drought. The city is surrounded by marshy plains in the north and, more to the south, by forest valleys where growing, in addition to omniprésents, mango trees and ébéniers. As a tourist, you may wonder what you have come to do in Wau. However, within a few years, the city could again attract investment and, why not, more and more visitors curious to discover the region.
