Bijapur, now officially Vijayapura, has a population of 326,360. Otherwise known as the Agra of southern India for its Islamic architecture dating back to the Adil Shahi dynasty (1489-1686), it was the capital of India between the 15th and 17th centuries. The city is dotted with mosques, mausoleums, palaces and fortifications. The austere elegance of these monuments contrasts with the exuberance of the Chalukya and Hoysala temples further south. In recognition of its greatness, the city was also one of the five satellite states that emerged from the collapse of the Muslim Bahmani kingdom in 1482. The city still has a strong Muslim identity, but is also the center of Lingayat, a branch of Shivaism where only one God is honored: Lingayat Siddeshwara, celebrated during a week of festivities in January-February. A city unjustly off the tourist trail, with treasures waiting to be discovered.
