A non-profit cultural association, the foundation was created in 1791 to develop local industry, agriculture, commerce and the arts. A showcase and supporter of Chiavari's economic vitality in the 18thcentury , the municipal institution today manages a library and four museums: the Risorgimento Museum, the Fighters' Museum, the Palazzo Ravaschieri Historical Museum and the Garaventa Museum, dedicated to Genoese sculptor Lorenzo Garaventa (1913-1999).
