Still part of the Volga-Baltic Canal, the Water Division Canal connects the rivers Kovzha and Vytegra without a lock. This canal marks the intersection of the slopes of the northern and southern basins of Russia. It was dug in 1963 on a plateau thus linking the Baltic and Caspian basins At km 855, the vessel uses lock No. 6 of the Pakhovmovskii hydroelectric power plant. The Novinkinskii lock at km 861 consists of locks No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5. The difference in height is quite dizzying as the ship descends some 38 m! This shows the colossal scale of the work required for this structure.
